What is a Community-Supported Agriculture “CSA” Membership?
Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a food production and distribution system that directly connects farmers to consumers. In short, people buy "shares" of a farm's harvest in advance and then receive a portion of the crops as they are harvested.
University Dining’s CSA includes 100% local produce, delivered directly to campus to save you a trip to the store and the farm. We’ve partnered with Forerunner Foods, a local produce distributor located in Woodstock, GA, to provide a ten-week subscription program featuring ten weeks of locally grown produce. All CSA produce is grown and harvested exclusively in the state of Georgia.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. Memberships are $200 for 10 weeks ($20 a week). All sales after February 23 will be pro-rated: $20 x number of weeks + sales tax.
Q. What's included?
A. Weekly shares of seasonal Georgia-grown produce, an insulated CSA bag and weekly newsletter with produce names, farms and recipes. Eating habits vary by individual, so each share will feed an individual or family, based on how produce heavy each meal is. Please see list below for an example of quantities.
Q. Is it cheaper than going to the farmer's market?
A. Yes! On average, boxes will be filled with local produce with a retail value of $22-27.
Q. How do I sign up?A. Registration is available in the Meal Plan office at The Commons.
Q. What kind of payment is accepted?A. We accept credit, debit, Dining Dollars and KCash. Payroll deductions are available for KSU faculty/regular staff. Payroll deductions are not available for occasional, temporary or student workers. All payroll deductions will occur within between April-May for the 2018 spring season.
Q. Where do I pick up my produce?A. Every Wednesday from Feb 28 - May 2, between 10:00AM and 2:00PM at the KSU Farmers Market.
Q. Can I try it first?A. Yes! We will have 20 a la carte shares for sale each week at the market, available on a first come first serve basis (available for purchase with KCash and Dining Dollars).
Q. Do you have an example list of what a weekly share might contain?
A. Yes, though every box will vary in variety and quantity, an example share could contain:
- 2 heads of lettuce
- 3 cucumbers
- 2 bunch of green onions
- 1 lb. of carrots
- 1 cabbage head or 2 heads of broccoli
- 1 bunch of kale
- 1 pint of cherry tomatoes
- 4 - 5 sweet potatoes
